Who is behind “Expats in Trieste” community?

“I moved to Trieste from Rome in 2016. I moved to Rome “for a year”, then met my now husband Francesco and together we moved to Trieste. It wasn’t in my plans and I was really hesitant about leaving a famously beautiful Italian city for a lesser known one, but moving to Trieste was the best decision I’ve ever made. Here we got married, had a kid and started our beautiful expat community which counts thousands of members from around the globe. And it’s getting bigger by the day! However, you’ll see that Trieste is not your typical Italian city. People here are nice yet closed – it’s hard to make friends, and sometimes it takes months to do so. Everyone speaks the dialect – it’s always good to know a few words as it makes people understand that you’re trying to fit in but also will help you get over the culture shock fast. Oh, and speaking Italian is a must. Sure, our big expat community speaks English, but don’t you want to make local friends? Needless to say, having been an expat for the past 10 years in Italy, I’ve jumped through many hoops to get to where I am today – enjoy the Italian life care-free (well, almost). I did that because Francesco, who is Italian, helped me understand the local bureaucracy better and now we can help you, too! We’ve been working on this project for many years now and we’re excited you can finally see it!”

“I am originally from Savona, Italy – the other beautiful coastal town, closer to France. I’ve lived abroad many years, got my MBA at the University of Iowa and eventually moved to Trieste a little over 9 years ago. I’ve been an expat half of my life and getting back to Italy was odd- I had a culture shock myself! Together with Maria we started an expat group here in Trieste just for fun at the beginning. For years we’ve been volunteering to help expats feel better in the city of Trieste, settle down, open bank accounts, getting their health insurance – all this because we know what’s like to be an expat! One day we realized that this was taking a lot of our time as the community was getting bigger and bigger and we decided to turn our full-time hobby into a start-up. For the past couple of years we’ve helped many expats move to Trieste, find a home, set their medical and bank accounts, meet the right people and start their love story with Trieste. Based on our own needs – need to socialize, find a place, meet parents – we’ve created many sub communities such as “Moms and Dads in Trieste”, “Networking in Trieste”, “Trieste Buy/ Sell/Swap” – all on Facebook. Eventually, many expats told us they didn’t use social networks and hence we decided to create this website, which we hope will become an online home to our expat community. You will see that some contents are only accessible to paying clients, and many are free – as they’ve been for the past 5 years of our existence. We’re here to help you feel at home in Trieste!”
